Francisco Antonio Garcia Lopez is considered Puerto Rico’s most infamous fugitive / serial killer along with Correa Cotto and Palomina.
Now looked at as a folkloric icon, his image was created by a media frenzy. His escapades were well documented in news outlets on the island, sometimes being elaborated upon, creating the mysterious and handsome, Toño Bicicleta.
This figure that the media created was in stark contrast to the man that terrorized the central region of the island and it created a vicious dichotomy between the public’s opinion. To some, he was nothing more than a violent criminal, murderer, kidnapper, and rapist. To others, he was a hero fighting a corrupt system.
He was a friend, a laborer, a father, a son, and a lover. The media followed and manufactured his journey as he escaped from prison three different times and evaded capture for over twenty years. Toño’s reign ended in 1995 when the police cut their way through the jungle, found his cabin, and executed him with a single bullet to the genitals.
This work will become the definitive history of Toño’s life. A documentation of the people who knew him and the places he traveled while committing his crimes and evading the police. Most importantly, it will be a search through all of the sensationalism for the real truth. And we will dissect the cultural climate of the time to learn how it is possible for a man with such brutal crimes to be revered.
